Local News in Brief : Growth Issue on Ballot

Share

An initiative calling for a two-year moratorium on major commercial and residential development in Pasadena has narrowly qualified for the ballot.

City Clerk Pamela Swift said Monday that the initiative petition was signed by 6,322 registered voters, just 10 more than the minimum needed to qualify it for a citywide vote. An initiative petition must be signed by at least 10% of a city’s registered voters.

The initiative, sponsored by the Northeast Pasadena Residents Assn., would also require developers to pay a series of new fees to the city and replace any housing destroyed because of residential or commercial development.

The association was formed to fight a proposed 184-unit housing development in northeast Pasadena. A separate petition drive to reject the Rose Townhomes project failed to gather the necessary signatures. Association officials were afraid that the latest initiative drive would also fall short.
