The city will take the next step in its search for an appropriate tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday, when it holds the first of eight public hearings to solicit suggestions from community members.

The City Council voted unanimously to find a new memorial to honor the slain civil rights leader after the black community’s angry response to last November’s vote to strip King’s name from a downtown thoroughfare and reinstate the name Market Street.

The suggestions so far include the waterfront convention center currently under construction, the proposed downtown library, Balboa Park and the proposed downtown government center.
