The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t break down federal income tax statistics the same as the state, but a draft of the IRS commissioner’s latest annual report shows that California residents accounted for 12 million of the 103.4 million individual federal income tax returns filed in 1986. California residents also paid $86.7 billion of the $742.4 billion in individual incomes taxes collected by the IRS for 1986.

A spokeswoman at the IRS district office in Laguna Niguel said that no other breakdowns were available, but suggested that the county-by-county percentages developed by the state should be about the same for federal taxes.

Using that guideline, Orange County residents filed about 1.1 million federal individual income tax returns in 1986 and paid about $8.7 billion to the IRS. That is an average of $7,882 per return.
