News In Brief : Mayor Can Run Again

Share

A Superior Court judge Tuesday cleared the way for Cerritos Mayor Daniel Wong’s reelection bid, ruling that a new city Charter amendment does not bar Wong from running for a third term on the City Council.

Although Judge Kimball Walker concluded that the amendment prohibits council members from serving more than two consecutive four-year terms, he said the amendment could not stop Wong from running because it does not take effect until the April council election.

Walker’s ruling came in a lawsuit filed by two amendment proponents who charged that the city clerk was violating the 1986 Charter revision by placing Wong’s name on the election ballot. The clerk was acting on the advice of the city attorney, who said the amendment’s application to incumbents was too unclear to preclude Wong from running for another term.
