Long Beach : Council Backs Navy Shipyard Workers Worried About Jobs

Share

Representatives of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and the Downtown Long Beach Assn. walked into City Hall on Tuesday to encourage the City Council to support the shipyard. But the council was already on board with support. Echoing the concerns of the speakers, the council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of keeping work on the USS Horne, USS Gridley, USS Halsey and USS Callaghan at the local shipyard.

A provision in a federal appropriations bill would require the shipyard to compete for warship maintenance with private shipyards. For Long Beach, that could mean losing work scheduled on the four Navy ships, laying off 5,600 workers and eventually closing the shipyard, officials say. City officials plan to lobby legislators later this month during a trip to Washington, D.C.
