Local News in Brief : Election Set for Utility Tax
The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council has set June 7 for an election on extending the city’s 5% utility users tax.
The tax, which was passed by ordinance in April, 1986, to pay for capital improvements such as road repairs, will expire in November if a majority of voters do not approve it in June.
The ballot measure seeks approval of the tax through June 30, 1993. By that time council members believe the development of the former Marineland site will be completed.
Last July, Arizona developer James G. Monaghan disclosed preliminary plans to build a luxury resort on the site. Council members have said the posh facility would bring the city substantial revenues and eliminate the need for the utility tax.
