About 8,000 high school and middle school principals and assistant principals from across the nation are expected at the National Assn. of Secondary School Principals five-day convention opening today at the Anaheim Convention Center.

During the convention, reports on two major education studies are to be released. A report scheduled for release on Sunday is about “the nature of sixth-grade learning” throughout the United States.

The report is based on adults observing, throughout a typical school day last year, 132 different sixth-grade students in 45 states. A panel of educators will comment on the report’s findings during the convention’s Sunday afternoon sessions.

On Monday, a report on proposals for improving Latino students’ test scores on college admission exams is scheduled to be released.

The report, by Prof. George Chambers of the University of Iowa, focused on Latino students in 12 states, including California. Chambers’ research showed that Latino students’ college-entrance test scores can be substantially improved “if certain factors are in place.” His report is scheduled to elaborate on those factors.
