Glenn Anderson scored four goals and Wayne Gretzky had five assists as the Edmonton Oilers rolled to a 7-4 victory over the injury-riddled Philadelphia Flyers Friday night at Edmonton.

Gretzky, who broke Gordie Howe’s NHL career assist record Tuesday night against the Kings, put on a playmaking exhibition in the first period when he set up four goals--all on power plays.

Then Anderson, who scored once in the first period, connected three straight times, all from the slot, in a 3:12 span early in the second period. He had 11 shots on goal in the first two periods.

Craig Simpson added two goals and two assists for the Oilers.

Mark Messier scored the other Edmonton goal, also on a power play, but was ejected before play resumed again for being the third man into an altercation.

Buffalo 6, New York Rangers 3--Jim Jackson, called up from Rochester earlier in the day, scored his first National Hockey League goal since 1984 to help the Sabres defeat the Rangers at Buffalo.

Jackson hasn’t played in the NHL since 1984, when he was with Calgary. His power-play slapshot in the second period gave the Sabres a 4-1 lead.

Washington 6, Quebec 2--Mike Ridley and Scott Stevens scored 62 seconds apart in the third period to trigger a five-goal outburst that lifted the Capitals over the Nordiques at Landover, Md.

The victory was Washington’s 10th in its last 11 games and moved the Capitals within one point of Patrick Division-leading Philadelphia.
