Cineplex Odeon has obtained the rights to repurchase the 50% interest in its stock held by MCA Inc. in the event of a change in ownership of MCA, parent of Universal Studios. MCA has been girding to meeting a possible unfriendly takeover bid from financier Donald J. Trump, who has obtained federal antitrust clearance to buy up to 24.9% of MCA. Last year, MCA acquired a half-interest in Cineplex Odeon, Toronto, a major theatrical exhibitor in the United States and Canada. Under an amendment of a standstill agreement reported to the SEC, Cineplex Odeon could buy “all but not less than all” of its shares held by MCA.
