Chargers Sign Three More Free Agents for Next Year

The Chargers on Monday signed center John Stadnik, cornerback Kevin Williams and safety Demetrious Johnson, all free agents.

Stadnik started in the Chargers’ three replacement game victories during the 1987 season. Williams played at Crawford High School and San Diego City College before moving on to Iowa State.

Johnson, a fifth-round selection of the Lions in 1983, played in 62 games for Detroit, starting 37 during four years. Last year he played in three games and started two for the Miami Dolphins.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

San Diego State’s Rodney Hawkins and Mitch McMullen were honorable mention selections on the All-Western Athletic Conference team announced Monday.

Hawkins, a 6-foot 8-inch senior forward from Chicago, leads the Aztecs in rebounding (7.9 per game) and is third in scoring (12.0 points per game). McMullen, a 6-10 junior center from Valencia, is second in scoring (12.6) and rebounding (6.2).

Conference champion Brigham Young and runner-up Wyoming each placed two players on the first team. BYU was represented by senior forward Jeff Chatman and junior forward Michael Smith. Wyoming center Eric Leckner and senior forward Fennis Dembo were selected.

Junior forwards Mitch Smith of Utah and Pat Durham of Colorado State were also selected.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Demetrius Bell, a reserve defensive lineman from Morse High School, has been suspended indefinitely from the San Diego State football team, Coach Denny Stolz said.

Stolz said he would not comment further on the suspension. The Aztecs held their first of 20 spring practice sessions Monday.

SOFTBALL

Missy Silacci scored on a wild pitch as host United States International University gained a 4-3, eight-inning victory and a split of its doubleheader with Western Illinois University. Karen Winkler is 3-9 and USIU is 6-14.

Western Illinois (1-1), ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division I, won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings.

GOLF

USIU’s Jim Wahl (148) leads the field after 36 holes in the Sacramento State Invitational at Rancho Murieta Country Club. USIU is eighth in the 16-team tournament, which concludes today.

In the University of San Diego Invitational, San Diego State won with a score of 370 in the nine-team field.
