Los Angeles Philharmonic executive director Ernest Fleischmann has withdrawn his name from consideration as general director of the San Francisco Opera. He met with the San Francisco search committee Sunday, and “after due consideration, I asked that my name be withdrawn,” Fleischmann told The Times on Tuesday. He had been considered a leading candidate for the post vacated by Terence McEwen last month, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The San Francisco Opera board met Tuesday afternoon to consider its options in finding a general director. (In a previous operatic flirtation, Fleischmann actually resigned from the Philharmonic in November, 1985, to head the Paris Opera. One week later, though, he decided to remain in Los Angeles after all.)
