A teacher at an East Los Angeles elementary school was charged Thursday with 12 counts of corporal punishment for allegedly striking her first-grade students over the hands and arms with a ruler and pointer.

Jean Wagner, 53, who was not taken into custody, is to be arraigned in East Los Angeles Municipal Court on March 21.

Authorities said the alleged incidents began last October and continued until this month at the Humphreys Avenue Elementary School.

After receiving complaints from students and parents, the county sheriff’s Child Abuse Unit investigated the matter and turned over its findings to the district attorney’s office.

If convicted, Wagner could face a maximum of six months in jail and/or a $500 fine on each of the counts.
