A Soviet newspaper reported that some Crimean Tatars may be allowed to return to the homeland from which they were deported by Josef Stalin in 1944. Crimean government deputy chief P.O. Fedulichev told Crimean Tatar representatives that families would be allowed to move back to the Black Sea peninsula “when conditions are ripe,” according to an article published in Pravda Vostoka earlier this week in Uzbekistan. The Tatars were deported during World War II when Stalin accused them of collaborating with Nazi invaders. Most now live in the Soviet Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan and in parts of the Ukraine.
