Local News in Brief : RTD Says No to Fare Hike
After wrestling with its budget problems for more than two hours, a sharply divided Southern California Rapid Transit District board again has voted down a proposal to increase fares and cut bus service.
With opposing factions of the board calling each other irresponsible, the board members on Thursday failed to take action needed to erase a $4.4-million deficit in the fiscal year that ends June 30.
The board also reached no agreement on how to deal with a projected $36-million deficit in the 1988-89 budget. The matter will be back on the agenda in two weeks, when the board is expected to discuss possible cuts in spending in lieu of fare hikes.
