Joe Nieuwendyk of Calgary is on course to become the most prolific rookie goal scorer in league history.

Nieuwendyk scored twice Saturday night to become the second rookie in NHL history to reach 50 goals.

Nieuwendyk’s second goal of the game, which drew him within three of Mike Bossy’s rookie record set in 1978, completed Calgary’s comeback from a four-goal deficit and led to the Flames to a 10-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

“I’m definitely going for Bossy’s record, but I want (the team to be in) first place overall,” Nieuwendyk said.

Nieuwendyk left the game at 1:26 of the final period when he was checked into the boards by defenseman Lindy Ruff and suffered a bloody lip.

The Sabres stunned the Flames by taking a 4-0 lead after one period, but the Flames responded with five goals in the second period and five more in the third.

Boston 4, Quebec 3--Former U.S. Olympian Craig Janney scored three goals, including the game-winner with 1:03 to play, as the Bruins rallied to win at Quebec.

Janney broke a 3-3 tie when he took Bob Sweeney’s pass from behind the net and put the puck through Quebec goaltender Mario Brunetta’s pads.

Montreal 5, Hartford 0--Chris Chelios scored two goals in a 4:35 span in the second period and goaltender Patrick Roy earned his second shutout as the Canadiens extended their winning streak to 10 games by blanking the Whalers at Montreal. The 10 straight victories are two short of the team record.

Detroit 4, New York Islanders 3--Petr Klima’s second goal of the game, a 25-foot wrist shot with 4:34 to play, gave the Red Wings a win over the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y., and extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.

Randy Wood’s goal at 10:36 of the third period had given the Islanders a 3-3 tie. He scored just 25 seconds after Klima’s first goal, on a power play, had put the Red Wings ahead, 3-2.

New Jersey 6, Philadelphia 5--Tom Kurvers scored two goals late in the second period to lift the Devils to a victory over the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Kurvers blasted a slapshot over the glove of goalie Ron Hextall at 14:25 of the middle period on a power play to break a 3-3 tie, then gave the Devils a 5-3 lead by scoring at 18:39.

Minnesota 6, Pittsburgh 3--Marc Habscheid and Dave Gagner each scored two goals, and Dave Archibald notched the go-ahead score as the North Stars beat the Penguins at Bloomington, Minn., to snap a seven-game losing streak.
