Donald Kaufman
I hope that amid all the controversy surrounding the Brentwood Library project, the image of who Donald Kaufman was is not lost. My father, the man whose name the Brentwood Library will bear, was the child of poor immigrants. He and Eli Broad built up the Kaufman and Broad Co. through their own efforts. My father strove to create good housing at modest cost. He understood and respected peoples’ struggles to better their lives, and he strongly believed in their right to a sound education. I feel certain he would have wanted the neighborhoods on the Library Department’s priority list to receive safe, adequate library facilities.
