Local News in Brief : Orange : College Protest Planned Over Play’s Suppression

Share

Students at Chapman College plan to stage a campus protest Monday over what they say is administration censorship of a student play that features nudity.

Joel Moffett, a communications major who wrote “The Coloring Book,” said administration officials refused to discuss the possibility of allowing the play to be performed on campus if the final scene, which features male and female full frontal nudity, is included.

College administrators could not be reached for comment.

Moffett said the scene, which he described as “completely unsexual and unerotic,” symbolizes rebirth and is essential to the artistic integrity of the performance art. The play was originally scheduled to be performed May 18-20.

Moffett said that if the protest--scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday--fails to persuade college officials to change their minds, the work will be performed elsewhere.
