A South Carolina truck driver was struck by a car and killed in Irvine early Monday after he stopped at a gas station to ask directions, police said.

James Troy Sanders, 49, of Marietta, S.C., had parked his tractor-trailer rig in the painted center divider on MacArthur Boulevard just south of Red Hill Avenue about 5:15 a.m., Irvine Police Sgt. Jim Lowder said.

At a gas station on the corner, Sanders asked directions for where to deliver a load of heavy machinery, then started back to his rig, near which he was struck by a car, Lowder said.

The car, driven by Judith Clough, 19, of Placentia, was traveling southbound on MacArthur at 40 m.p.h., Lowder said. Clough was not cited.

“Apparently she didn’t see him,” Lowder said. “The truck lights were on and . . . hit her windshield, possibly distracting her.”

Sanders was declared dead at the scene with major head injuries, police said.
