Minimalist composer Philip Glass will create a full-length opera to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the New World. The Metropolitan Opera of New York has commissioned the work, titled “The Voyage.” It will be given its premiere in October, 1992. Glass said “The Voyage” would be an allegorical opera in three acts about the “human need to discover and explore” and would make reference to the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus. “My American operatic career began at the Met in 1976 with a performance of my ‘Einstein on the Beach,’ ” Glass said. “For me, ‘The Voyage’ will be an appealing creative odyssey which I look forward to sharing with everyone at the Met.”
