Quake Stress

Share

Times science writer Lee Dye’s excellent presentation (“San Andreas Fault Theories Shaken Up by New Studies,” Part I, March 7) describes geological stress and its impacts upon earthquake potential.

Concern and support for reliable earthquake prediction methods are increased by our awareness of the intense stress and emotional effects (short and long term) produced by an earthquake experience.

Persistent symptoms in children or adults such as sleep difficulty, nightmares, impaired appetite, unusual anxiety or fears, impaired social or work capability, depression, unprovoked or uncontrollable recollections of earthquake experience may be significant and warrant help.

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health is continuing to provide “exceptional services” which include confidential, anonymous symptom assessment; appropriate short-term crisis counseling; and referrals to public or private agencies for persons in need of more than short-term intervention. There is no charge for this. Information and assistance related to accessing these “exceptional services” are available to schools and community groups.

All Los Angeles County residents who experienced the Oct. 1 Whittier Narrows earthquake are eligible for help and should call (213) 738-4961 for assistance.
