Local News in Brief : Garden Grove : Four Families Homeless in Fire, Possible Arson

Share

Firefighters suspect arson in a blaze that started Wednesday in the garage of a Garden Grove apartment building, leaving four families homeless and causing an estimated $30,000 in damage.

Battalion Chief Vince Bonacker of the Garden Grove Fire Department said the 1:14 p.m. fire at 12192 Haster St. quickly spread to the attic of the two-story building, severely damaging one of the building’s four units.

But because water and electricity were cut off, all 16 people in the building were forced from their homes.

American Red Cross spokesman Kennedy Grant said the organization is providing the residents, three families and an adult male, with motel rooms and meals.

Bonacker said investigators suspect that arson was to blame for the fire. He said a car parked down the street was set on fire only 20 minutes before the apartment blaze.

Before firefighters could control the apartment fire, a wind-blown ember ignited a roof of another apartment building at 12191 Adrian St.
