Local News in Brief : Rezoning for Single-Family Units

Share

Only single-family homes will be built in an area of Hawthorne previously zoned for apartments and condominiums, the City Council decided Monday.

The rezoning will affect about 35 Hawthorne properties in an area bounded by the San Diego Freeway, Felton Avenue, 120th Street and 116th Street.

The area was originally zoned for single-family homes but was rezoned for multifamily residences several years ago to create a buffer against freeway noise. City officials said a graded-earth sound wall has been built, which makes the area suitable for single-family homes again.

Councilman Steve Anderson voted to refer the matter back to the Planning Commission because a consultant had said the rezoning would not be consistent with the city’s proposed general plan. Only Councilwoman Ginny Lambert supported him. Both emphasized that they didn’t oppose the rezoning itself, only the way it was being done.
