Student Protest Backs Pay Hike for Teachers

Students at Saddleback High School in Santa Ana staged an hourlong protest Thursday on behalf of district teachers who are seeking a new contract and pay raise.

The teachers, whose last contract expired June 30, have been deadlocked in negotiations with Santa Ana Unified School District since February.

Students at the high school on South Flower Street left their classes about 11 a.m., after a false fire alarm sounded, district Assistant Supt. Rudy M. Castruita said. Students remained outdoors “because it was already so close to their lunch hour,” he added.

Two Santa Ana police officers stood guard in front of a closed gate to the school’s courtyard as students inside shouted in favor of a teacher pay raise. The protest broke up shortly after noon as the students, urged by teachers in the courtyard, returned to their classes.

Castruita said the students caused no damage or major problem.

Bill Ribblett, executive director of the Santa Ana Educators Assn., said teachers had no role in initiating the protest. Teachers are seeking a 9% pay raise retroactive to July 1, he said. The district’s last offer was for a 3% pay hike.

Despite rumors of a possible teacher walkout or “sickout” today, Ribblett said no such demonstration is planned by the union.

School district officials confirmed Thursday that a memo was sent to all personnel recently informing them that in event of a massive “sickout,” proof of illness would be required.
