Hundreds of Palestinian refugees clashed with Israeli soldiers after Muslim prayers today in the Gaza Strip, and one Arab was killed, the army said.

Another 25 were wounded throughout the occupied territories as violence broke out following the noontime prayers, officials said.

Two Israeli civilians were detained for allegedly stockpiling an arsenal of weapons intended for anti-Arab attacks, police said.

Israeli military authorities detained a prominent attorney from Gaza and four Arab journalists, prompting an outcry from Israeli liberals. Authorities also ordered foreign journalists out of the Gaza Strip and many areas of the West Bank.

Chief of Staff Appeals

Chief of Staff Dan Shomron called on Israel’s leaders to reach an accord with the Arabs to end more than 14 weeks of unrest.

In an interview with the daily Davar newspaper, Shomron said the Israeli army “cannot endure this situation forever. The matter has to be solved.”

The latest fatality brought to 101 the number of Palestinians killed during the violent uprising, according to U.N. figures. Most of the deaths were caused by gunfire or beatings.

The injured included a 60-year-old woman who was shot in the eye by a rubber bullet and children aged 3 to 12 who were apparently beaten by Israeli troops, the U.N. said.

Protests erupted at the Shati refugee camp in Gaza after hundreds of worshipers streamed from the camp’s Al Gharbi mosque and saw soldiers scuffling with three youths, witnesses said.

Copters Drop Tear Gas

Troops dropped tear gas canisters from helicopters, set tires ablaze and fired rubber bullets before using live ammunition to restore order, the witnesses and the army said.

The army confirmed one Palestinian was killed. Officials at Shifa Hospital identified him as 24-year-old Hani Abu Hamam.
