Roundup : Titans’ Beck Throws 2-Hitter, Stops Pacific in PCAA Opener

Mark Beck pitched a two-hitter as Cal State Fullerton defeated the University of Pacific, 5-0, Friday in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball opener for both schools at Pacific.

Beck, a sophomore, allowed just an infield single by Ron Beverly in the fifth inning and a single to center by Willie Tatum in the ninth. Beck (5-4) struck out 12, giving him 37 strikeouts in his last three games.

Fullerton (19-8 overall, 1-0 in the conference) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Rex Peters scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Ross. The Titans made it 2-0 in the third when Jason Rolish scored on a sacrifice by Shane Flores, who had two hits.

Flores singled home a run in the fifth, and Rolish hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

Fullerton has won 14 of its last 16 games. Pacific is 7-16 overall.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4--Jeff Kidwiler went 2 for 3, including a two-run homer in the first inning, and Mike Grahovac was 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead Chapman (14-11-1, 3-2) at Hart Park. Kidwiler’s 2 hits raised his average to .415 (41 for 99). Jeff Mooney (4-3) went seven innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits, before giving way to Matt Patuano, who allowed one hit over the final two innings to earn his fifth save.

The victory was the Panthers’ eighth in their last 10 games, and their first in eight games over a left-hander. Joe Locues (2-3) allowed 9 hits and all 5 runs in 6 innings, and Ruben Jauregui had two hits for Dominguez Hills (9-13, 0-4). The teams will meet again in Carson Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the Cal State Fullerton gymnastics tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 279.20, Northern Illinois 276.55, California 217.85--Sophomore Bill Barham won the all-around with a score of 56.65 to lead Fullerton to victory at Titan Gym. Barham won the floor exercise (9.75), pommel horse (9.55) and parallel bars (9.70). Fullerton’s Amir Kadury, a freshman, finished third in the all-around with a score of 56.05. Fullerton is 12-9 this season.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, New Mexico 1--Miles Walker won his ninth straight match, defeating Carl Hale, 6-4, 6-1, to lead Chapman (12-5) at Ridgeline Country Club in Orange. Walker is 23-6 on the season. Chapman is the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II poll.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Chapman 2-1, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0-2--Jackie Blake threw a seven-hitter in the first game for Chapman (21-10, 5-1) at San Luis Obispo.
