Dismantling of all U.S. bases in Spain was urged by several thousand people who marched to the jointly used naval base at Rota on Spain’s southern Atlantic coast. The protesters, mobilized by regional pacifist groups and the Spanish Communist Party, called for an end to U.S. use of Rota and three air bases and nine communications centers elsewhere in Spain. No violence was reported by police. Washington has agreed to withdraw 72 F-16 aircraft from the air base at Torrejon within three years but would retain its other facilities under a new 8-year treaty expected to be signed this spring.
