Local News in Brief : School Trustee Sues

Share

Los Angeles school board member Jackie Goldberg on Monday sued the Compton Unified School District to try to get back a part-time teaching job.

In the Superior Court suit, Goldberg said she had been working part time or on unpaid leave of absence since she was elected to the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education in 1983.

For the 1986-87 school year, Goldberg had asked for and was given a part-time assignment at a Compton school that amounted to 20% of a regular, full-time job. But after continuing to work part time last fall, she got a letter from the district telling her she had to return to full-time work or ask for an unpaid leave of absence for the rest of the school year.

In October, the district stopped paying her for her part-time work, so she stopped showing up, the suit said. Goldberg alleges that the district was wrong for, in effect, dismissing her without a hearing.

Officials of the Compton school district could not be reached for comment.

Goldberg is asking the court to order the district to return her to her part-time job and give her back pay and benefits she has lost.
