Ferris Fain Charged With Growing Marijuana

Ferris Fain, a former American League batting champion with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1951 and 1952, was being held without bail Tuesday in the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, Calif., on charges of cultivating and possessing marijuana for sale.

Deputies recently raided Fain’s property on a private lake in the Sierra foothills community of Georgetown and found more than 400 marijuana plants, Sheriff’s Lt. Howard Wilson said.

Fain, 66, who reportedly suffers from arthritis and leukemia, was placed on probation for growing marijuana for sale in 1985 because authorities believed a jail sentence would aggravate his health problems, Wilson said.

“He increased his operation incredibly since 1985,” Wilson said.
