An intruder holding a Hollywood woman at knifepoint early Wednesday was shot in the face and killed by the woman’s boyfriend after refusing to release her, police said the couple told them.

The dead man, who had not been identified late Wednesday, apparently had confronted the 21-year-old woman in an underground garage below her apartment building at 1616 N. Poinsettia Place about 2:30 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Detective Russ Kuster.

Demanding money, the man forced the woman to take him to her apartment, where her 26-year-old boyfriend had armed himself with a revolver, Kuster said. When the man threatened the couple, the boyfriend fired one round, hitting him in the face.

The would-be robber was declared dead at the scene.

The names of the woman, who was not hurt, and her boyfriend were withheld.

Police released the couple Wednesday afternoon after several hours of questioning, and are continuing to investigate the slaying.

Neighbors, who said they heard nothing, complained that security in the building is lax and that it is frequented by drug dealers and street people.
