Sen. Bob Dole conceded today it is “a foregone conclusion” that Vice President George Bush will win the Republican presidential nomination and indicated he was re-evaluating his own campaign.

“I can read the numbers and I probably know what’s happening,” Dole said.

Of his own campaign, he said he is likely to “have something to say about that” before the April 5 Wisconsin primary.

In a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Dole voiced pessimism about his own presidential chances.

‘Nobody Really Seems to Care’

“I’ve been saying now for some time as a candidate all the things I thought we should focus on and nobody really seems to care,” Dole told his audience. “I think it’s probably a foregone conclusion what’s happening on the Republican side.

“But I still have some things to say,” he added. “Lo and behold, as your candidacy weakens, you find more people willing to listen.”

Dole has been without a victory since Feb. 23 in Minnesota and South Dakota. He was soundly trounced by Bush in the Super Tuesday round of contests on March 8 and in the Illinois primary on March 15.
