John Grier to Become First Black Referee in the NFL

John Grier, who has worked for seven seasons as a field judge in the National Football League, will become the league’s first black referee next season.

The referee is the head official on the field, and the appointment represents a breakthrough for a league that has been criticized for lacking black head coaches and adequate minority representation in front-office positions.

“I certainly don’t see myself as a pioneer and, frankly, I’m kind of surprised that so many people are congratulating me,” said Grier, who was selected from more than a dozen candidates to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Bob Frederic.

“Of course, I realize everyone will be looking at me at least until the game begins,” Grier said. “I have wanted to become a referee since Day 1, and I feel I’m ready. I’m just in a position now where I’ll have to prove myself all over again.”

The NFL has 107 officials, of whom 11 are black.
