NCAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT : Roundup : Texas’ Conwell Gets 26 Points in 79-58 Victory Over Stanford

Doreatha Conwell scored a season-high 26 points as the Texas Lady Longhorns defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 79-58, in the NCAA Women’s Midwest Regional basketball semifinals at Austin, Tex.

The Lady Longhorns (32-2) will meet Louisiana Tech in the final Saturday.

Conwell, a 6-foot 3-inch senior from Locke High School, was only two points shy of her career high. Beverly Williams added 17 points for Texas.

Sonja Henning led Stanford (27-5) with 15 points.

Louisiana Tech 80, Mississippi 60--Nora Lewis scored 19 points and Venus Lacy added 17 for the Lady Techsters (29-2), who beat the Lady Rebels (24-7) in the other Midwest semifinal.

Tennessee 72, James Madison 52--Sheila Frost had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Lady Vols (30-2) won an East Regional semifinal at Norfolk, Va. The Lady Vols will play Virginia Saturday.

Virginia 89, Rutgers 75--Donna Holt scored 18 points and led a late surge as Virginia (27-4) defeated the Lady Knights (27-5) in the other East Regional semifinal.

Auburn 68, Georgia 65--The Lady Tigers’ Mae Ola Bolton hit a tie-breaking basket with eight seconds left, and the Lady Bulldogs lost a chance at a final shot when a technical foul was called on Coach Andy Landers in a Mideast Regional semifinal at Athens, Ga.

Auburn (30-2) will play Maryland Saturday.

Landers got the technical for arguing a jump-ball call, and Diane McNeil made the foul shot to clinch the victory.

Maryland 81, Ohio State 66--Vicky Bullet scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the ninth-ranked Lady Terrapins (26-5) over the sixth-ranked Lady Buckeyes (25-5).
