Hawthorne Community Medical Group said it won a supplemental award of $1.44 million against Maxicare Health Plans for costs incurred during arbitration proceedings, bringing the total award to more than $15 million. An arbitration panel had awarded Hawthorne nearly $14 million after ruling that Maxicare had underpaid the medical group for services to Maxicare members. But the net amount came to about $11.7 million because of other, smaller awards to Maxicare. Maxicare has said it intends to appeal the decision.
