L.A. Press Club Honors Times, L.B. Newspaper

The Los Angeles Times and the Long Beach Press-Telegram were the top award winners in the print categories at the Greater Los Angeles Press Club’s 30th annual Journalism Awards dinner Friday while KNBC-TV and KCBS-TV shared top honors for television news.

The Times won for overall excellence for newspapers with circulation over 100,000 and placed first in five individual writing categories. The Long Beach Press-Telegram placed first in four categories, including best spot news coverage.

Overall Excellence

Overall excellence for newspapers under 100,000 circulation went to the Pasadena Star-News, while the Newhall Signal won best overall news coverage by a weekly or semi-weekly newspaper. The L.A. Weekly was voted the best weekly news magazine.

Best television newscast 60 minutes and longer went to KNBC-TV Channel 4 for its 5 p.m. edition. The KCBS-TV Channel 2 news at 6 p.m. took the award for best overall news coverage in a newscast 30 minutes or less.

KFWB Radio 98 won in the category of best radio newscast 15 minutes and longer, while KFI Radio 640 took first place for best radio newscast 15 minutes and less. The big winner in radio news was KNX Radio 1070, which garnered nine individual first-place awards.

KNX Radio Winner

George Nicholaw of KNX Radio won the Joe Quinn Memorial Award for “consistent and effective management of his station for over 20 years, and his thoughtful and articulate editorials on the station.”

Times staff writers who won individual awards were Julie Cart for sports reporting; Dennis McDougal for reporting on the media, and Michael Cieply for entertainment reporting. Alan Weisman and Jay Epstein won awards for articles appearing in The Los Angeles Times Magazine.
