College Spring Sports : Riverside Grand Slam Drops Northridge, 7-6

Logan Ostrander’s two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning powered UC Riverside to a 7-6 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory over Cal State Northridge on Saturday at Riverside.

Cary Snyder relieved Northridge starter Fili Martinez with two outs in the ninth, walked a batter, then went 3-1 to Ostrander before the Highlander slugger sent the next pitch over the fence to end the game. Martinez pitched 8 innings, allowed six hits, struck out five and walked five. He had a two-hitter going into the ninth inning.

Northridge (11-20, 2-4 in conference) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Lenn Gilmore doubled in a pair of runs and Chae-Ho Chong singled Gilmore home.

The Matadors made it 6-1 with a three-run eighth inning. Scott Strickland walked, John Bonilla doubled and Jim Mitchell walked to load the bases for Northridge. Strickland and Bonilla scored on wild pitches and Chong singled home the third run in the inning.

Gilmore, who went 1 for 4 with three RBIs, extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games.

UC San Diego 21, The Master’s 3--The Tritons took an 11-0 lead after two innings on their way to a nonconference victory at UC San Diego that was called after five innings because of the ten-run rule.

Kevin Taylor (2-5) took the loss for Master’s (15-16) after allowing eight hits and 10 runs in 1 innings. UC San Diego (13-7) collected 19 hits including five extra-base hits in four innings.

VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. San Diego State, 15-1, 17-15, 15-12--Junior Bob Samuelson had 18 kills in 23 attempts to lead the Matadors to a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. victory at San Diego State.

“We wanted it real bad,” Northridge Coach John Price said. “We’ve been struggling all year on the road and I was really concerned about this match. But the guys were really well prepared and came out fired up.”

Northridge (14-13, 6-8 in conference) won the first game handily and led, 14-9, in the second game before having to rally for a 17-15 win. The Matadors were down 11-9 in the third game, but went on a 6-1 run to earn the three-game sweep.
