College Roundup : Kaub Paces Fullerton to Victory Over Tulane

Keith Kaub had three hits and two RBIs to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 8-4 victory over Tulane Sunday in Busch Challenge round robin baseball tournament at the Superdome in New Orleans.
Kaub singled and scored as Fullerton (23-9) scored three runs in the second inning. He singled in runs in the fourth and eighth innings. Kaub was 6 of 11 in the three tournament games, scored 6 runs, had 5 walks, 5 RBIs and a home run.
Brent Mayne had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and was 6 for 16 in the tournament.
Danny DeVille (3-0) pitched into the eighth inning to get the victory. Paul Johnson got the save by getting Ron Brown to ground out with the bases loaded. Brown had hit a two-run home run and also had an RBI single earlier for Tulane (17-7).
In a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game:
UC Irvine 10, San Jose State 9--Irvine (20-14-1, 1-1) scored two runs in the ninth to win at San Jose. Jay Hawthorne and Tracy Shanahan singled to start the ninth inning and Don Nicholson singled home pinch-runner Chris Dray to tie it, 9-9. Al Rodriguez, a freshman from Westminster High School, singled home Shanahan for the winning run.
San Jose (19-16, 1-1) led, 5-1, going into the sixth inning but Irvine rallied with seven runs capped by a three-run double by John Seeburger to put Irvine ahead, 8-5. San Jose rallied with four runs in the eighth inning, including a three-run home run by Eric Nelson, who lost in relief.
In the Irvine tennis tournament:
Irvine 5, Duke 1--Irvine (16-3) won five of six singles matches to win the tournament championship. Mark Kaplan defeated Jeff Hersh, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, Trevor Kronemann defeated Scott McTeer, 6-4, 6-2, and Richard Lubner defeated Jason Rubell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, for Irvine, which was 16-2 in singles matches in the three-day tournament.
In the Golden West softball tournament:
Central Arizona 5, Fullerton 0--Central Arizona (33-1), the nation’s top-ranked community college team, won the tournament title behind Nycki Sandstead (17-1),who threw a six-hitter and hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Fullerton (32-6) defeated Arizona Western, 1-0, earlier Sunday to reach the final.
