University of New Orleans Fires Basketball Coach, Who Says He’ll Sue
The University of New Orleans fired men’s basketball Coach Art Tolis for “just cause” Tuesday, apparently intending to avoid buying out the remaining two years of the first-year coach’s contract.
Tolis said he will sue for breach of contract and damages.
“I do not intend for anyone to release a statement like they released today, with all its implications, without having to back it up,” he said.
After a 5-5 start, Tolis, 53, led the Privateers to a 21-11 record and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament.
His base salary was $58,000 a year, meaning the school would have to pay $116,000 to buy him out. Dismissal for cause, however, would relieve the school of that burden.
