Featherweight Hugo Anguiano of Los Angeles figured to have problems in Tuesday night’s 10-round main event at the Reseda Country Club against Rodolfo Ortega (23-15-3) of Mexico City.

After all, Anguiano had lost six consecutive bouts and was signed for the fight late Saturday when Jesus Poll, originally scheduled to fight, had to be scratched because of a cut lip.

But Anguiano, 128, proved a worthy enough substitute as he won a unanimous decision over Ortega, 126, to improve his record to 10-11-1.

But if Anguiano thinks he was a last-minute replacement, he ought to talk to junior lightweight Wes Smith of Los Angeles. When Smith lost a unanimous four-round decision to Ruben Maldonado, also of Los Angeles, in the first preliminary Tuesday, he had a pretty good excuse. It was his second fight in 24 hours .

Smith, who won on a second-round KO Monday night in Irvine, was approved by the California State Athletic Commission to fight Tuesday night when the Country Club had several fighters drop out at the last minute.

“This was an emergency situation,” said Marty Denkin, assistant executive officer of the commission. “I felt that Smith was in no jeopardy since he hardly got hit in the Irvine fight and barely worked up a sweat. If we were ever going to waive the rule that requires a 48-hour wait between four-round fights, this was it.”

Maldonado, 130 1/2, is now 3-11-1 while Smith, 127, drops to 1-2-1.

Also Tuesday: junior welterweight Ronnie Wiswell scored a first-round knockout victory over Jerry Rosenberg.
