Local News in Brief : Library Still Needs Funds

Share

The Los Angeles Public Library’s “Save the Books” campaign has reached its $10-million goal, but officials say funds are still needed to to replace books lost in two 1986 arson fires at the historic Central Library.

“The $10 million will account for a large share of our needs, and we are extremely grateful for the effort that has been made,” city Librarian Wyman Jones said. “But our losses totaled almost $17 million.”

Mayor Tom Bradley, who co-chaired the 22-month fund-raising drive with ARCO Chairman Lodwrick M. Cook, said the fund is still accepting tax-deductible gifts. “If you were planning to help, don’t stop now,” he said.

A $250,000 challenge grant from the Ledler Foundation will match contributions on a three-to-one basis, Jones said.

The fund receives contributions by mail at Save the Books, P.O. Box 71238, Los Angeles, CA. 90071-0238.
