Local News in Brief : Mission Viejo : Voter Registration Push Fattens City Treasury

Share

Volunteers registered 485 voters here last week, which did more than swell the voter rolls in Orange County’s newest city. As a result, the city treasury will receive an additional $57,000 or so each year for the next nine years from state tax revenues.

The registration drive was held to boost the population estimate of Mission Viejo, which officially became a city Thursday. Incorporation entitles Mission Viejo to receive a portion of state vehicle license, gasoline and cigarette taxes. These taxes are distributed according to population. The population of new cities is estimated by tripling the number of registered voters as of 5 p.m. on incorporation day.

Estimated Mission Viejo population was 68,502 before the voter registration drive. The registration drive raised the population estimate to 69,957.
