Local News in Brief : Clerk Sickout Takes Hold

Share

A sickout by Los Angeles County Superior Court clerks protesting stalled contract negotiations with the county gained momentum in its second day Friday, with more than half the clerks failing to report to work.

Eric Webber, the court’s assistant executive officer, said that 143, or 52%, of 275 clerks scheduled to work did not show up, compared to 128, or 47%, who stayed off the job Thursday.

“We anticipated that,” Webber said of the increase.

Officials were “using court supervisors and clerk trainees to cover the courts the best we can,” he said.

No effect on criminal court or juvenile court cases was anticipated, he said, but some civil court matters were postponed until next week.

“Our belief is that (the sickout) will be over by Monday and we’ll resume negotiations,” Webber said.
