Hours after a heckler called him a hypocrite, Jimmy Swaggart gave his most emotional speech since stepping down from the pulpit Feb. 21. An Assemblies of God official said Swaggart’s appearance at a Baton Rouge, La., service would have violated the one-year preaching ban that the church ordered last week, had Swaggart accepted it. The church’s General Presbytery banned Swaggart for “moral failure,” and a prostitute has said Swaggart paid her to pose nude. His attorney has said Swaggart will return to the pulpit May 22, and a church spokeswoman said he may face expulsion.
