A compact car carrying students from Brigham Young University collided head-on with a lumber truck, killing three of the students, including a 19-year-old Fullerton woman, and seriously injuring two others.

The car’s driver, Ross Evan Williams, 18, of Calabasas, and two passengers, Daniel James Williams, 20, also of Calabasas, and the Fullerton woman, Karen Joyce Hanks, 19, died at the scene Monday, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Jim Roden.

Passengers Rebecca Ann Burraston, 18, and Johnson Chun-Sing Tong, 22, suffered major injuries.

Burraston, a resident of Tucson, was listed in fair condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center, while Tong, a resident of Walnut Creek, remained in critical condition Tuesday at San Bernardino County Medical Center.

The Williamses were presumed to be brothers. Roden said.

Roden said the accident apparently happened when the driver of the Hayward Lumber Co. truck, Glenn Paul Davis, 22, swerved into opposing traffic to avoid rear-ending slow-moving cars in front of the truck.

Davis suffered a minor scratch, Roden said.
