Anthem

The last several Laker home games have provided us with spirited renditions of our national anthem. But three singers I’ve heard have not known the words to “The Star Spangled Banner.” Shocking and sad.
The larger problem rests with a school system (or an attitude) that neglects not just the words, but the story and message behind them.
The Lakers could help by assuring that performers know the lyrics; our schools should insist that young citizens learn and understand the words. Literacy and knowledge are essential if we are to remain “The land of the free and the home of the brave.”
