Wind Hazard Is Predicted for Mountains

Keep a low profile if you’re planning a getaway to the mountains this weekend--high winds are on the way, and they’re expected to cause a hazard for campers and other light vehicles.

A wind advisory for the mountain areas was issued Thursday night and will be in effect through today for gusty southwestern winds of 25 to 40 m.p.h. The big gusts should gone by Saturday, but winds will persist in both the mountains and the deserts for the remainder of the weekend, said National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara.

Elsewhere in the county, the recent stretch of summerlike weather will be broken briefly while a weak cold front from Nevada moves through the area, Shigehara said. It will be cool in all areas Friday and cold at night in the inland areas. Temperatures could drop to freezing in the mountains once the winds die down, Shigehara said.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures will return soon enough, in time for San Diegans to enjoy outdoor activities Saturday and Sunday. As the cold front departs, temperatures in all areas should climb by five to eight degrees, Shigehara said.

Highs on the coast today should hit 67 to 73 degrees, with nighttime lows dipping to 50 to 55. Inland highs today are expected to reach 72 to 80 degrees, with lows of 47 to 52. The mountains will have highs of 57 to 65, dropping to an icy 36 to 45 at night. Desert highs are forecast for 84 to 93, with overnight lows of 55 to 60. Temperatures will be a few degrees higher in all areas Saturday and Sunday.
