A two-alarm fire caused $300,000 damage Thursday to a two-story home in Del Cerro, authorities said.

It took 40 firefighters from the San Diego and Heartland fire departments more than an hour to put out the fire that started shortly after 4 a.m. on the ground floor of the house in the 6600 block of Hillgrove Drive, authorities said. A San Diego Fire Department spokesman said the two occupants of the house were saved when they were awakened by a smoke detector.

The fire was so intense, the spokesman said, that the flames were visible for more than three miles.
