Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Chemical Spill Leaves One Worker Injured
A special firefighting team was called to a Santa Ana firm Friday to clean up a chemical spill that resulted in minor injuries to one worker, Fire Department officials said.
About three gallons of hydrazine solution, an acid-type liquid, spilled from a tank onto the workroom floor at Gemini Industries in the 2300 block of South Pullman Street, according to Santa Ana Fire Department spokesman Mark Grant.
Authorities said the chemical was neutralized and no hazardous fumes escaped into the atmosphere. Grant said the spill was confined to a small area of the workroom.
One employee, who was not identified, received chemical and thermal burns on his feet and was treated at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Grant said. Six other employees who were working in the area were not injured.
Hydrazine is a highly toxic chemical normally used as a jet and rocket fuel. It is known to cause cancer and can irritate the skin and eyes, fire officials said. It may explode when exposed to heat or combined with oxidizing materials.
