A sheriff’s deputy training at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho in Castaic threw a tear-gas canister against a hill and accidentally set off an 8-acre brush fire Friday, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire on the sheriff’s training range just outside the prison, in the 29300 block of The Old Road, broke out about 11:20 a.m., Fire Capt. Rod Washington said.

No buildings were threatened by the blaze, which 160 firefighters and two helicopter crews contained about 1 p.m. and extinguished about 4 p.m., Washington said.
