A late afternoon surge in temperatures on Sunday put the high reading at Lindbergh Field within two degrees of the record for the date, officials said.
The mercury hit 83 degrees at the airport at about 4:20 p.m. Sunday, while most inland areas saw highs in the lower 90s, National Weather Service spokesman Wally Cegiel said.
The record high at the airport for the date is 85 degrees, set in 1968.
Daytime temperatures are expected to cool off seven to eight degrees today in all areas of the county, Cegiel said.
