Wardair announced that it will buy up to 16 McDonnell Douglas MD-88 commercial aircraft, becoming the first Canadian airline to choose the new twin jets. Wardair Chairman Max Ward said the airline ordered eight MD-88s and has taken options on eight more. Deliveries will begin in June, 1989, and continue through June, 1991. The company declined to specify the price but the deal is estimated to be worth about $400 million. MD-88s are the most technically advanced of the five MD-80 models. Wardair’s MD-88s will have a 128-passenger, two-class interior.
